The Ashen Cloak

Image
The air was clearer up here. Zhillik wasn’t a particularly large Hive City, especially by Imperium standards, but it was sizeable enough to create its own micro-climate. From this lofty Spire, he could see for miles. Across to the officer-level platforms and hab-towers. Down into the slum depths of Zhillik. And up into the very peaks of the city. He’d been here for weeks, becoming a shadow, a part of the Spire’s architecture. He was never given a name. He was told during his upbringing that such an affectation would only get in the way, or put his fellow brothers in danger. Without a name, people would not remember him. People would not ask questions. And people would have no answers. If he was ever captured, he would have nothing to give his interrogators. But the thought of capturing or even knowing of his existence was a laughable concept. To locate and reprehend a member of the Clade of the Ashen Cloak was like trying to grasp Shadow itself. Even with in the Cult th...

Vernox Rising: An Update

Image
It's been a while since we've posted, and I'm you can all appreciate why! With the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, Games between Squid and myself have had to be postponed due to a complete lockdown here in the UK. We were absolutely gutted, as we were scheduled to play on the weekend that all gaming stores were ordered to close! But, we also understand that safety and the health of the general population is of paramount importance, so we welcome measures put in place to save lives and keep the nation safe. But what does this mean for Vernox Rising? Well, it's an unusual one, and something we're still trying to figure out. As we're both now stuck at home with a lot of free time, we've both decided that we are now allowed to build and paint anything we desire. Previously, we were buying/building/painting only to update our armies unit by unit, but we've decided to use this opportunity to bolster our ranks, and already we've both been busy:  We...

Roll Call 1: Ambush at Lessell

Image
With the Vernox Rising campaign, one of the main aims was to build up our armies together. As these are both new forces for us, we decided that playing through a campaign would not only be fun, but allow us to escalate the conflicts as we collected and painted more units. As previously mentioned in our article here , new units would be determined by the roll of a dice, which would allow us the following: D6 Result: 1:  HQ 2:  Troops 3:  Elites 4:  Fast Attack 5 or 6:  Player’s choice of unit. After the Ambush at Lessell mission, we were allowed 2 new units for the next game, which we both rolled for. We've decided to split these rolls into a separate post from the battle reports, so that we can offer a bit of insight into what we've picked, and why we've gone for them. So let's get to it! Brapscallion So I got a 3 and a 6, which meant an Elites unit and something I could choose, which I'm absolutely over the moon about! I kept my picks, a...

Battle Report: Ambush at Lessell

Image
Dimiter Sozar looked up at the grating duct above him. He could hear them. each footstep on the ground was a hammer blow. He saw their gold plate armour glistening in the dusk. This was to be his moment. His insignificant life had led to this. In complete silence, he stood in the dark tunnel, surrounded by his kin. The brotherhood had to be protected at all costs, and outsiders shown the true might of the Endless Deep. He reached for his bolt pistol, firing a single round into the chain lock on the grating above him. As he sprang forth from the darkness with the rest of his brothers, he began to see just what he was up against... And so welcome to the first Battle Report! It's been such a fantastic journey getting to this stage already, and we were extremely excited to get our first battle underway and going! Squid and myself have been painting and planning for a while now to get to this stage, and now it's time to get the Vernox Campaign underway! The Ambush at Lessell i...

The Tetrarchy

Image
Perseus stood on the observation deck and stared down at the planet below. In some ways, it resembled Terra. It was a desolate ball of dust, an arid, dry mess. But Terra was at least of great significance to the Imperium. The planet of Aronnax was just one of a million unremarkable worlds, another planet that made up the numbers of the galaxy-spanning empire. Shield-Captain Perseus  Perseus stood resplendent in his armour. He was a Shield-Captain of the Adeptus Custodes, his suit of Auramite armour gleamed in the glow of the planet beneath him. He was a member of The Tetrarchy, an informal collective of himself and three other Shield-Captains;  Maxentius, Ramases and Vespasian,  Perseus smiled to himself, "The Tetrarchy. It had been  uncharacteristically witty of The Captain-General Trajan Valoris". The name was a reference to an almost-forgotten ancient piece of Terran history, a time during the Ancient Romani Empire when four Emperors had ruled ...

The Disappearance of Dimiter Sozar

Image
The settlement of Conseil was a sleepy gathering of hab blocks, mid-tier Ferrocrete work centres and nothing much else. It was a forgettable place on a forgettable planet: Aronnax. First settled by The Konstruct towards the end of Governor Karros’ reign, Aronnax was established as the Colony looked to expand its production and reach across the Fontannus system. Although not particularly rich in resources, Aronnax still had enough Polonium Ore at a reasonable mining depth to be of interest to the Konstruct. And as the planet was largely arid, this resource was easier to reach. Conseil Soon after colonisation, Aronnax became a prospering planet with a number of bustling settlements and space ports. It was seen as a place for enterprising individuals to forge their own path, and for opportunists to make a name for themselves. But over time the planet faltered. Mines started to dry up, and The Konstruct wouldn't release funds to invest in the equipment needed to reach the de...

Unit Focus: The Clade of Andaluciá

Image
Ordo Xenos Classification: Third/Fourth-Generation Genestealer ‘Neophyte’ Mutation Local Designation: ‘Clade of Andalucía’ Estimated Population Size: Unknown When the symbols started appearing on back-alley walls or Metrosphere stations isn’t known. From seemingly nowhere, the image of Tentacles wrapped around something approaching a worm or insect were daubed across the hive cities and worker communes of Vernox. Disregarded as small-time gang markings or teenage graffiti, the symbol was much more. It was a statement of intent, a welcoming beacon to those who knew. It was a sign that the Clade of Andalucía was active in the area, and that those touched by the hand of the Deep weren’t alone. Named after the mining vessel that first found the would-be Patriarch of the entire Coven, The Clade of Andalucía are one of the many circles running in The Cult of the Endless Deep. The Clade contains members in the third or fourth generation of the family, those who have g...
